Job 28:28 “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom.”
Last week the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued a report on a growing phenomenon in America, rising deaths from drug and alcohol abuse and diseases related to those addictions, and to suicide. The problem is so severe it’s having a significant impact on the average life expectancy.
Since the report came out, journalists have been interviewing academics to find out what’s behind the phenomenon. The “experts” generally point to shrinking economic opportunity as the culprit. While economic distress can trigger such problems (if we had shrinking economic opportunity), it does not address the underlying issues.
These problems happen because we forget a simple proverb: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Proverbs 1:7
Those who reject God wind up exchanging hope, meaning, and purpose for temporary fleshly satisfaction, which leads to despair. Find Jesus and find an everlasting satisfaction for the soul.
