Roy’s Blog: “Stay Awake”

Matthew 24:42 “Stay awake for you do not know what day your Lord is coming.”

Have you ever had trouble staying awake for something? Maybe you are trying to wait up for the weather, but doze off about the time it comes on. My wife has trouble driving for long distances. After an hour, her eyelids want to drift downward. Maybe you don’t have trouble staying awake, but have trouble keeping your attention focused. Too many things get in the way of your goal. It wanders away at the least thing that comes along. My Dad would see something off the side of the road while driving, and not only would his attention wander, so would the car in the direction he was looking.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the things of the world and let our attention wander. I hear this often, “I’m so busy all the time. Sunday is the only day I have to rest. Or, Sunday is the only day I have to go to the store, or to be with my family.”

Why are they so busy? Sometimes, they work extremely long hours, maybe out of town. Usually, it is because they are so caught up in the world. They are busy keeping their children in every activity available, driving them here and there. They just don’t have time for the Lord. Their attention has wandered away. Even if they go to church on Sunday, many times their minds are focused on worldly things. “What am I going to fix for lunch quickly, so we can get to…” Whatever it is. Our minds dwell on the things we make important. Today, start making the Lord so important in your life that your mind dwells on Him, on His coming Kingdom. Stay alert. Stay awake. Be ready.

“Jesus is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Matthew 24:44
