Matthew 16:4 “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.”
Jesus said of His generation that they were “an unbelieving and perverted generation.” “Seeking after a sign, but none will be given, except the sign of Jonah.”
The sign of Jonah was the fact that he was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, and was brought out by God. Jesus would be giving His generation that sign in his death on the cross, His being in the grave three days and three nights, and then His resurrection. That would be the only sign they should need. Same with our generation. We need only the resurrected Jesus as our sign. The rest is what Jesus wanted from His generation–faith.
Today we suffer a generation gap much like Jesus’s day. An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign when one is right in front of them, and yet they walk away. As older generations of Americans slowly die off, it is inevitable that the values of the younger generation will become the values of America as a whole. Our generation has fallen short on imparting our values to the next generation. American values today mean something completely different from what they meant in previous generations. Today’s “values” should absolutely terrify us.
Patriotism, religion, and family are given much less value than in previous generations. The older generation, and the next generation coming up have mostly rejected the one obvious sign they will have, and they have too little faith to believe without a sign.
