Roy’s Blog: “Perilous Times” in a new tab)

2 Timothy 3:1-3a “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection…”

These verses give us three facts: First, there will be a period of history known as the “last days” of earth. Second, These days will be perilous, meaning dangerous and savage. Third, the most dangerous thing about them will be a sickness of self-love or unrestrained selfishness.

Where it says men…read mankind. I’ve heard many women give the excuse for an abortion as, “I had other things I wanted to do with my life before I started a family”…self-love. “My body, my choice”…self-love. “I wasn’t ready to take care of a baby”… self-love. Sin.

Without the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, let’s face it, we are a very selfish people more concerned about ourselves, what we want and what we expect out of life, than we are about anyone else. It is Jesus alone who empowers us to love others, to care for someone else’s welfare above our own. It is Jesus who reaches down in our depths and causes us to put self aside and care for a child that you might not have planned, even one that may have been forced on you. It is Jesus love for us that helps us put self aside and humbly obey God’s word.

Sin makes the times perilous. Sin makes the times dangerous to live in. Sin is the curse of our world. But, the perilous times are evidence that we live in the “last days” or the “end times” nearing the coming of the Lord.

We are to rise above the perilous times through the strength of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to the glory that awaits.
