Roy’s Blog: “Alert and Sober”

I Thessalonians 5:4-6 (NASB) “But you, brethren, are not in darkness that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.”

Paul tells us in Thessalonians 5 that Jesus is coming like a thief in the night, but not for the Christian. He is coming like a thief for the lost in the world who have never been “born-again”, those who have refused the life-saving gift of Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord. They may even be very religious, but if they have no true relationship with the Lord-they are lost and in darkness.

Paul states in verse 4, “But you, brethren, are not in darkness.” If you are born-again in Christ, you have the Holy Spirit residing in you. The Holy Spirit will illuminate your mind and heart, opening your spiritual eyes to see and understand the mysteries of God’s Word, including the times and the character of the Lord’s return. We are to be alert and “sober (v8) having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.”

We are not destined for the wrath that is to come upon the world. But, we need to “encourage one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25
